In the belief that art students can only learn to think independently when knowledge, imagination and reflection combine to work together in an unorthodox and critical way, Studium Generale Rietveld aims to encourage critical forms of learning, making and thinking. It follows a new research trajectory every year around a specific theme that links up with current events, issues and discussions in the (art) world. Artists and theoreticians from home and abroad offer a broad spectrum of perspectives on the overarching themes with lectures, performances, presentations and screenings.

After a preliminary programme, which also includes film screenings, reading groups, workshops and publications, there is an annual four-day conference festival in collaboration with guest curators who make contact with urgent critical discourses from different perspectives and practices. This takes place at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and is open to the public.

Since 2014 Studium Generale teams up with Rietveld Uncut; departments and individual students develop projects in relation to the theoretical framework of Studium Generale. The presentation and exhibition of these programmes is simultaneous to the conference, bringing ‘the making and the thinking’ together.

Naima Ramos-Chapman is from Brooklyn, New York. Currently a writer and director on the critically acclaimed HBO series, Random Acts of Flyness, Ramos-Chapman makes stories, stemming from true events, which incorporate magical realism and seek to juxtapose psycho-spiritual realities alongside the brutal mundanities of everyday life. Ramos-Chapman’s first short, AND NOTHING HAPPENED, which explores the psychological aftermath of sexualized violence, premiered at the 2016 Slamdance Film Festival and screened at the L.A. Film Festival, BAMcinemafest, Blackstar Film Festival, Rooftop Films, Urbanworld, CinemAfrica in Stockholm, and Tacoma Film Festival where it won Best Director. It is a Vimeo Staff Pick. In 2017, Ramos-Chapman received a Sundance Institute Screenwriting Intensive fellowship for her first feature-length script SAD SONGS IN LANGUAGES I DON’T UNDERSTAND, currently in development. Naima’s second short film, PIU PIU, premiered at Blackstar Film Festival in 2018, won its first award—for best cinematography—at Tacoma Film Festival, and screened at Slamdance Film Festival in 2019. In 2017, Naima received a Sundance Institute Screenwriting Intensive fellowship for her first feature-length script SAD SONGS IN LANGUAGES I DON’T UNDERSTAND, currently in development.
