PROGRAM
With only one more week to go before the opening of the 5 day conference-festival VOICE ~ CREATURE OF TRANSITION, outside of the academy, we will use this final gathering inside the space of the academy to look both back and forward. Gabriëlle Schleijpen, curator in chief of the Studium Generale program will introduce the 4 invited curators and connect the lectures and the performances they will be presenting during 4 succeeding days at theatre de Brakke Grond, with some of the ideas and intuitions that have been brought to the academy by the numerous guests of the past two months. This preface to the conference will be framed by two internationally acclaimed artists, Nils Bech and Ricardo Basbaum.
Nils Bech
Nils Bech is a Norwegian singer and performance artist who explores the tensions between art and dance, contemporary music and pop music. At the Rietveld Academie he will deliver the final conclusion to the 8 VOICE ~ CREATURE OF TRANSITION sessions that took place ‘inside the academy’ with his performance, Look Inside.
Ricardo Basbaum
Ricardo Basbaum is an artist and writer from Brazil. He will open the session with a reflection on text, voice and collective speech, The Clash between Body and Artwork.
The clash of the body with an artwork produces a sonic effect. This presents itself at the installation space when, as a consequence of the body / artwork shock, a “percussive moment” is activated. What is the rhythmic pulse that runs through that environment? And how to work with some of the sonority issues emerging from that encounter between body and artwork? “Collective conversation” can be taken as one of the interesting effects of the social production brought about by contemporary art – not only in terms of producing a public speech, but “collective conversation” also as a writing – and sonic strategy
